A Chinese who filmed himself catching a seagull by the neck has been accused of animal cruelty. The 24-year-old man, surnamed Wang, told authorities that he was trying to gain more attention when he asked friends to film him with the struggling gull along the eastern shore of Dianchi Lake in Yunnan province.
The man then posted videos on several social media accounts before being reported to the police the next day, according to Chinese media. Video shows the man violently snatching the gull by its neck while he laughs at the bird as it struggles to free itself. Another part shows him catching another seagull by its feet and preventing it from flying away.
Police say the man spent nearly five minutes hurting the gulls. He had posted 10 photos and six videos of the incident, causing a “negative impact to society”. He was accused of violating the wildlife protection act and has been fined 3,000 yuan (£338) for hurting the two seagulls.
Net users on social media supported the penalty. “He totally deserves it!” one comment read. “He wanted to be famous—now the whole country knows who he is,” another said.
The lake in Kunming city offers beautiful scenery of the waters and Western Hills, and are attractive to thousands of migrating gulls due to the province’s mild climate during winter. There is an increasing number of seagulls in the city in recent years, the local forestry bureau said, with a record number of 40,500 gulls sighted last December. In 2015, the number of seagulls which arrived at Kunming for the winter was over 40,000 for the first time, setting a 31-year record.
