意料之外的温暖回信
意料之外的温暖回信

My uncle’s wife died when he was 58 years. The doctor discovered he had a very serious heart disease.
Uncle Mark didn’t accept defeat easily. He began studying medical reports in the library and found an article in a magazine about a well-known heart surgeon, Dr. Justin Donald in Chicago. He had saved the life of someone with the same disease. The article said Dr. Donald’s fees were very high. Uncle Mark couldn’t possibly pay them.
However, uncle Mark wrote to him. He simply listed his reasons for wanting to live: his two children were so young, and his little boy was dreaming of traveling and seeing the world. There wasn’t a word of self-pity—only warmth and humor and the joy of living. He mailed the letter, not really expecting an answer, because he thought the doctor wouldn’t care about a letter.
A few days later, uncle Mark received a reply. He read aloud: “Your beautiful letter moved me very deeply. If you can come to Chicago, there will be no charge for either the hospital or the operation. Signed—Justin Donald.”
That was ten years ago. Since then, uncle Mark has been around the world. His two children are in college. For his age, he is one of the youngest, most alive people I know.
