世界第一夫人——埃莉诺·罗斯福
世界第一夫人——埃莉诺·罗斯福

Eleanor Roosevelt was the wife of America’s thirty-second President, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. She made many meaningful and lasting contributions to human welfare. She earned the respect of millions of people throughout the world because of her efforts for children and the poor. As President Truman described her, she was “the First Lady of the World”.
Although faced with great difficulty, Mrs. Roosevelt devoted her entire life to others. When her husband Franklin Roosevelt’s political career seemed over because of a terrible disease, she provided him with encouragement that made him keep trying until eventually he was elected President of the United States.
Mrs. Roosevelt showed great concern for others both in her private and public life. At a time when it was still unpopular to support such activities, she taught at a school she had started for poor children and managed a factory that gave work to those who had no jobs, and campaigned for equal rights.
When she became First Lady, Mrs. Roosevelt cared much for people suffering from the Great Depression. Indeed, a good number of her ideas were included in her husband’s New Deal social welfare program.
She also showed the world that the First Lady was an important part of American politics. She spoke out on human rights, women’s issues and children’s causes. She also wanted to help the country’s poor and stood against racial discrimination.
Truly a lady of greatness, Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “You get more joy out of giving to others, and should put a good deal of thought into the happiness you are able to give.”
In 1968, she was awarded one of the United Nations Human Rights Prizes. After her death, there was an unsuccessful campaign to award her a Nobel Peace Prize.
