A very lucky person has won the largest single lottery payout in United States history—$758.7 million.
A 53-year-old hospital worker from Massachusetts, Mavis Wanczyk, came forward on Thursday to claim her prize in the Powerball drawing. She said she had quit her job and wanted to take some time to relax. She chose to take a single payment of $480 million, or $336 million after taxes. Winners can also choose to receive the jackpot(头奖) in 30 payments over 29 years.
The winning numbers were drawn on Wednesday night in the Powerball, which is played in most US states. The matching numbers were 6, 7, 16, 23 and 26, with the Powerball number 4. Wanczyk bought her ticket on Wednesday at a store in a small Massachusetts town. She said for some of the winning numbers, she chose birthdays of people she knows.
The jackpot was the second-largest overall lottery prize in US history. The biggest jackpot ever was a $1.6 billion Powerball payout in 2016. But that prize was shared among three winners, for they all bought the first prize number.
The Powerball lottery is held twice a week, with numbers drawn from two containers. One container holds 69 numbered balls, from which five are drawn. Another ball, known as the Powerball, is selected from the other container. To win the full jackpot, a person must match all six numbers.

1.How did Wanczyk choose to take the prize?

A She took a single payment.

B She took it in 30 payments.

C She took it in 29 years.

D She gave it to the government.

解析:选A。 She chose to take a single payment of $480 million, or $336 million after taxes.

2.How much tax should Wanczyk pay?

A 144 million dollars.

B 278.7 million dollars.

C 336 million dollars.

D 480 million dollars.

解析:选A。 She chose to take a single payment of $480 million, or $336 million after taxes.

3.What number does Wanczyk buy?

A 467162326.

B 426232676.

C 262326764.

D 671623264.

The matching numbers were 6, 7, 16, 23 and 26, with the Powerball number 4.

4.Why did Wanczyk get more than the winner of the $1.6 billion jackpot in 2016?

A Because $1.6 billion jackpot in 2016 should pay more tax.

B Because $1.6 billion jackpot in 2016 was shared by three.

C Because Wanczyk didn’t need to pay tax.

D Because Wanczyk was the luckiest person.

A very lucky person has won the largest single lottery payout in United States history - $758.7 million. The jackpot was the second-largest overall lottery prize in US history. The biggest jackpot ever was a $1.6 billion Powerball payout in 2016. But that prize was shared among three winners for they all bought the first prize number.

5.What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A The largest number of the six number is 69.

B There are seventy numbers in the Powerball lottery containers.

C You can win a smaller prize if you match five numbers.

D You can get your money back if you didn’t win.

To win the full jackpot, a person must match all six numbers.
