Members of Parliament(MP) are calling for a 25 pence of tax on single-use coffee cups, and a total ban unless recycling improves. A report by the Environmental Audit Committee says the tax should be used to improve the UK’s recycling systems. The MP say throwaway cups should be banned completely by 2023 if they are not all being recycled.
In response, Starbucks said it would try out a 5 pence cup charge in 20 to 25 central London outlets. “We will begin the movement in February and it will last for three months at first,” the firm said, adding that it continued to offer a 25 pence discount to customers who brought their own reusable cups.
The government agrees plastic waste is a problem and may also call for tax on single-use plastics.
The UK throws away 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups every year—that’s enough to circle the planet five and a half times. Almost none are recycled and half a million a day are thrown away. The UK’s coffee shop market is expanding rapidly, so we need to start a movement in recycling.
Disposable coffee cups are technically recyclable, but most are not because the UK has just three equipment that can split the paper and plastic parts for recycling.
The committee has called on the government to require coffee cups from coffee shops without in-store recycling systems to carry “not widely recycled” labels to increase consumer awareness. Coffee shops with in-store recycling systems should print their cups with “recyclable in store only”, the MP add.

1.Why did the MP call for tax on single-use coffee cups?

A Because they are made from plastic.

B Because they can only be used once.

C Because they will cause great pollution.

D Because there is nearly no recycling for them.

Members of Parliament(MP) are calling for a 25 pence of tax on single-use coffee cups, and a total ban unless recycling improves. The MP say throwaway cups should be banned completely by 2023 if they are not all being recycled.

2.Which of the following has a different meaning with the others?

A Single-use cups.

B Disposable cups.

C Reusable cups.

D Throwaway cups.

25 pence discount to customers who brought their own reusable cups中可以获得25便士优惠的reusable cups指的是不一样的东西,故选C。

3.You could save _____ if you take your own cup in a London Starbucks.

A 0.05 pound

B 0.23 pound

C 0.3 pound

D 0.45 pound

In response, Starbucks said it would try out a 5 pence cup charge in 20 to 25 central London outlets.和最后一句...adding that it continued to offer a 25 pence discount to customers who brought their own reusable cups.

4.What can we learn from the fourth paragraph?

A British people drink a lot of coffee.

B British people prefer single-use cups.

C The earth is so small that we can easily circle it.

D There will be no cups if we don’t start recycling.

解析:选A。 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups every year, half a million a day, expanding可知英国人对咖啡的需求量很大,故选A。

5.What should be added on the coffee cups according to the MP?

A Recycling instruction.

B Recyclable symbols.

C Recycling places.

D Recyclable plans.

解析:选A。 根据not widely recycled, recyclable in store only可知这些都是关于如何回收的指导建议,故选A。
