A five-month-old dog fell into hot tar in northern India few days ago. Luckily, it was eventually saved by a four-hour operation.

Workers from the Animal Aid Unlimited rushed to the scene in the city of Udaipur, Rajasthan, after they received a phone call from a passerby. They found the dog lying motionless. His hardened body was stuck on the ground. "There was no way the poor dog could have come out of his own, without any help," one of the workers told us.

The workers spent hours massaging a large amount of vegetable oil into his body in order to loosen the tar covered on dog’s skin. They were trying to avoid the use of kerosene because it would bring great pain to the dog. After about four hours, the workers were able to pull the dog out of the sticky liquid. Then they took him to the animal shelter. 

In the animal shelter, it took several days for the workers to clear the dog’s body of the tar. On his first night at the shelter, he was so frightened that he was breathing heavily. He was named as "Tar Baby". Now he is being taking good care of and has recovered successfully.

Animal Aid Unlimited in Udaipur is the home to a number of dogs, cows, donkeys and pigs. It provides emergency assistance and shelter to street animals.
