Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo on Friday 26th, July began asking the public to give names for a female baby panda born at the zoo recently.

Many people went to the zoo in Taito Ward, Tokyo, soon after it opened at 9:30 a.m. on the day. There you could see two boxes that were placed to collect possible names.

Saya Goto, a third-grade primary school student from Rifu, Miyagi Prefecture, came up with the name Kyan Kyan after sweet candies. “I’d be glad if I could be a keeper,” she said.

The zoo is collecting possible names for the baby panda until Aug. 10. Only one name written in katakana is acceptable. The names can also be sent by email or left on the zoo’s website. Up to now, it has received 120 thousand suggestions from all over the world, including China, Australia, America and France.

A selection group, which will be made up of the Tokyo metropolitan government and the Tokyo Zoological Park Society, among others, will choose the name. The winning name will be announced around late September, when the panda celebrates the 100th day since her birth.
