Blood donors may no longer be needed in the future after scientists showed it was possible to create blood from stem cells. The 20-year project could get ready for an unlimited number of blood and immune cells for transplants(移植). It could be done simply by reprogramming a patient’s own skin cells.

The research was reported in the journal Nature. It makes us see the hope of developing personal designed treatments for blood disorders, drug-screening and reducing shortages of donated blood.

Dr Ryohichi Sugimura, of Boston Children’s Hospital, said, “This gives us the possibility to have a limitless supply of blood stem cells and blood by taking cells from universal donors(万能供血者).” This could possibly increase the blood supply for patients who need blood put-in. For patients receiving treatment for cancer, blood disorders, after accidents or during a medical operation, or new mums who lose blood in childbirth, blood is an important part of healthcare.

In the new research, the Boston team started with embryonic stem cells(胚胎干细胞) and put them into a chemical soup which began their change into a tissue(细胞组织) which makes blood stem cells in the end. When the tissue was transplanted in mice, new blood cells were created in the animals.

1.Why might blood donation no longer be necessary?

A Because the 20-year project are getting ready.

B Because lots of blood can be made from stem cells.

C Because scientists created new ways for transplants.

D Because scientists can reprogram a patient’s cells.

根据第一段的“it was possible to create blood from stem cells”可知是因为可以用干细胞造血了,故选B。

2.What good will the research probably bring us?

A Blood disorders.

B Drug-screening.

C Shortages of donated blood.

D Personal designed treatments.

根据第二段的“It makes us see the hope of developing personal designed treatments”可知这项研究让我们看到了发展个性化设计治疗的希望,故选D。

3.Who do the cells that make blood come from?

A People after suffering from accidents.

B People who are universal donors.

C New mums losing blood in childbirth.

D People being treated for blood disorder.

根据第三段的“by taking cells from universal donors”可知造血细胞来自万能供血者,故选B。

4.What does the tissue grow from?

A New blood cells.

B A chemical soup.

C Blood stem cells.

D Embryonic stem cells.

5.Where can you probably find this passage?

A In a children’s book.

B In a medical magazine.

C In a website about illness.

D In a film advertisement.
