At 10 a.m. Saturday, Cache Valley families began gathering at Skylar’s Pond in Willow Park for the 16th annual Bear River Celebration and Free Fishing Day. The event allowed families to fish for the day without a license and learn about Bear River wildlife and conservation(保护).
According to Eli Robinson, the program coordinator(协调人), between 400 and 500 people were expected to visit the pond. Free water bottles were given to kids.
Nicaela Haig, a wildlife recreation technician, said the event was “the result of a huge partnership(合作)”. Haig said local police officers were also included in the partnership though the “Fish with a Cop” program. Many of the kids who attend Free Fishing Day have never fished before, so officers walk around to teach kids how to get the teeth of the fish off on the sport of fishing. “I love the look on the kids’ faces when they catch a fish,” Haig said.
Sarahann Delaney said she brought her child to the event to get more fishing experience with the help of the experts. She said community events like these help show parents and children what the community has to offer. “I think they are a great way for kids to experience things they don’t experience,” Delaney said.
Dominick Barratt, a wildlife conservation officer, said 500 rainbow trout were stocked in the pond during the first week of April. The pond also has green sunfish and bluegill — which are a special treat for those new to fishing. “Bluegills are an excellent fish for beginning anglers(垂钓者),” Haig said,“because they tend to be more aggressive.”
Barratt said the event is important to the community and has a long history of getting kids excited about fishing. “I remember Free Fishing Day when I was a kid,” Barratt said.
