货车司机意外获得一枚罕见错币,价值高达2000英镑

A delivery driver looking through his spare change discovered a rare silver coin thought to be worth up to £2,000. David Allan, 54, from Portchester, was in disbelief when he found the coin in his change, so immediately sought to research it. Mr Allan, 54, couldn’t believe his luck when he discovered he had found a mule coin made in error by the Royal Mint. Mr Allan discovered his coin could be worth more than £1,000 because in 2014 a similar one sold for £1,350 and another in 2016 was valued by experts at £2,000.
The delivery driver should have it checked by the Royal Mint. He took it to coin expert Lee McGowan in Portsmouth, who believes the coin is real. Delighted Mr Allan said, “It jumped out to me straight away when I was looking through my change. It definitely came from a shop in Portsmouth after I did some shopping there. When I was researching how much it was potentially worth I was shocked to see that it was worth more than £1,000 ---that would be a pretty big return from a coin.”
Mr McGowan, of Hampshire Coins & Artefacts, said, “When David first brought it over to me, I was quite shocked. Coins are a passion for me and I’ve never seen something quite like this before, so I did wonder, ‘Is it real or fake?’ Having looked further at it, I am sure it is real and it could be worth a lot of money.”
The coin dealer explained that it was made in error by the Royal Mint and is a mule coin. Mr McGowan added, “This happens all the time but what’s rare is when the coins get out as you never know how many of them are out there and that’s what makes them worth so much. Coins are made in their hundreds every second, so of course there are going to be mistakes.”
