A Russian inventor is marketing special stoves to fire up mobile phones. The new device—suitable for campers—allows you to boil water or cook meat at the same time as charging your device.

The first 100 wood-burning stoves, priced at £80, have been sold, including to the US and British tourists to Russia, but the flames mean this is not a charger to use inside your home. Looking like a small camping stove, it has a tiny generator attached to it that can change heat into electric power to reliably charge cellphones. Inventor Aidar Khairullin, from Ufa, is working on a new model that will allow customers to power up their laptops.

“There is a fireproof wire attached to the metal body of a generator, made of titanium(钛) and stainless steel, that has a USB port,” he said. “To charge your phone, you need to plug it into the USB port. Charging will take the same time as it would traditionally take thanks to 10W power output. The device also has a power stabilizer to avoid changing currents so that the device is not damaged while charging.” He said, “While the phone is charging, you can use the stove, for example, to boil water or fry meat.”

It is called a Tengu, after the Japanese spirit supposedly protecting travellers. Khairullin said he got the idea for the stick-burning device after becoming dissatisfied with other on-the-move charging devices. He won an inventor's contest and received funding to help develop and market his stove charger.
