Tom is thirteen years old. He began to study in a middle school two years ago.
Tom lives with his grandmother and parents in a small village. It is nearly five kilometers from the school. So Tom has to get up early in the morning and run to school from Monday to Thursday. Tom’s father once offered to buy a bike for him. But Tom refused because he knew the poor family couldn’t afford it. So he kept running to school on school days. Now Tom can run very fast and he is never late for school.
Last Thursday, Tom won the running race in his school. He told his grandma about the good news as soon as he got home. “I broke the running record today, Granny,” called out the boy. But the old woman wasn’t happy. She thought for a while and said, “I’m sorry to hear that. We may have no money to pay for it, you know!”
