Scientists in the UK have found a way to produce blood on a large scale. The blood is good enough to give to patients who need blood in hospital. For a number of years, they have been able to produce red blood cells in a laboratory. However, the process to do that was very slow and they could not produce a lot of blood. So the blood was very expensive. The new way means scientists can make blood with no amount limitation. A researcher said, “We have shown a possible way to keep on producing red cells.”
Another researcher told reporters his team now needs the technology to produce blood on a large scale. He said that to produce that much blood would be quite a challenge. The next step of their work is to look at methods of producing more. He said that his team would produce only rare types of blood at the beginning. He said these are difficult to find with usual blood donation resource. He said, “The first step of producing red blood cells is likely to be for patients with rare blood groups, because suitable red blood cell donations can be difficult to find.” With this technology, blood-losing will no longer be a problem. Many lives will be saved.

2.Why was blood expensive in the past?

A It was hard to produce red blood cells.

B It was slow to produce and little could be produced.

C The blood donation resource was hard to find.

D The demand was much larger than productive ability.

However, the process to do that was very slow and they could not produce a lot of blood.  So the blood was very expensive.

3.What is the new technology for?

A To produce blood on a large scale.

B To produce safe blood for patients.

C To produce blood quickly.

D To find more blood donation resource.

解析:选A。 Scientists in the UK have found a way to produce blood on a large scale. Another researcher told reporters his team now needs the technology to produce blood on a large scale.

4.Why did the team start at the rare types of blood?

A Because it was hard to find these kinds of blood.

B Because these kinds of blood were more expensive.

C Because these kinds of blood could make more money.

D Because there were many people with these kinds of blood.

解析:选A。 He said these are difficult to find with usual blood donations resource. He said, “The first step of our red cell product is likely to be for patients with rare blood groups, because suitable red blood cell donations can be difficult to find.”

5.What’s the best title for this passage?

A No longer be afraid of blood-losing.

B Rare types of blood are difficult to find.

C Blood is hard to produce in a large amount.

D New technology to produce blood on a large scale.
