Barnsley Council has become the first in the country to cut school summer holidays to less than five weeks. Children will enjoy an extra week off in October instead. I do enjoy my time with them but I just feel the holidays should be broken up throughout the year. It’s really hard to take care of children for six to seven weeks.”

Ian Stevenson, a secretary, said, “In Britain we already have some of the shortest summer holidays. We don’t need to have a short holiday any more. Younger primary school children who are only 5 or 6 find it difficult to get adapted. Teachers and parents both know that tired children don’t learn well.
