If you are a man living in China and smoke, you may want to stop. That is because one in three of all the young men in China will die from smoking. A report says, "About 66% of young Chinese men become smokers, and most start before they are 20 years old. If they don’t stop, about half of them will die." They took two studies of smoking. The first study was in the 1990s and about 250,000 men were in. The second study is still going on. This study has about 500,000 people, both men and women.

In China, smokers each year will go up from about one-million in 2010 to two-million in 2030. And the number will rise to three-million by 2050. There is no easy answer to make the problem go away. The story is different with Chinese women. Not many women are smoking in China today. 10% of old women were smokers, and only 1% of middle age women smoke. But that could change. They found that young Chinese women began to smoke. Some women think smoking makes them look beautiful.
