Millions of Britons are planning to save money by holidaying inside the UK this year. But new figures show they could end up spending MORE.

Three Britons in four are planning to stay in the UK this summer, rather than head overseas, because they think it is much cheaper. Britain is seen as the second cheapest place to holiday (after Greece), but just one problem, we're wrong.

When compared on cost, Britain was discovered to be the most expensive option for both accommodation and spending costs. “We have been surprised to see just how expensive it can be for those holidaying in the UK rather than going abroad,” said Shane Forster from Voucherbox.

“With the amount of travel deals and cheap flights that are available online, a night in a UK hotel costs £65.22 on average, whereas a night in a hotel in the Med costs as little as £42.50.And that's not including the food, drinks, taxis.”

Overall, the average Brit can expect to spend more than £116 a day entertaining the family on a UK holiday—but as little as £63 abroad. More than making up for the cost of the flights. But not everywhere is equal in UK. Taking a holiday in Wales spends just £94.01 on five days out for the family, while doing the same thing in London or the South East will cost you a whopping £242.86.Activities included a visit to a theme park, a day on the beach, a trip to a stately home, a day at the museum and a trip to the zoo.
