因携带毒品而受审的人

A drug addict was in possession of two dozen heroin wraps when stopped by police in a Carlisle street, a court has heard. It is said that Paul Graham, 47, was planning to supply the class a drug to fellow users. However, he said that the illegal substance was for his own personal use.

Graham, of Milbourne Street, Carlisle, denies possessing heroin with intent to supply and has gone on trial at Carlisle Crown Court. A jury heard that Graham was “caught red-handed” with 24 individually wrapped packages of the drug during the early hours of December 10 when he was walking in the street with his family.

Graham said he had just bought the heroin for £200 a short time before his arrest. He admitted in a police interview he did not discuss the weight of the illegal purchase with his supplier. He claimed his usual heroin consumption added up to four, five or even six bags of the drug every day. This, the jury heard, would have meant his habit cost him in the region of £350 a week to pay for.

He was asked by officers in an interview how he paid for that when he was in receipt of benefits of just £300 a fortnight. At that point Graham didn’t say anything about that.

Graham took a decision not to give evidence during the trial. Gerard Rogerson had earlier said in his opening of the case: “The man would have you believe that the drug was for his own personal use, and he shouldn’t be punished for that, but what he said leave judge doubtful. The trial continues to find the truth.”
