Boys or girls? That is today’s sensitive and hot topic all over the world.
According to China’s census, 118 baby boys were born for every 100 girls in 2010. Because of this ratio, many men in China will fail to marry a wife. This serious social problem is due to Chinese traditional opinion towards boys and girls.
Chinese favor boys much more than girls. They think that man can do more hard labor outside and they are able to earn more money, while women are supposed to stay at home, doing housework. The other reason is that boys carry on the family name when they get married, while girls do not carry on the bloodline which is of great importance to Chinese family. So, in the countryside, many baby girls are killed before they are given birth.
The same issue is also getting popular in America. If they were only allowed to have one child, more Americans would prefer it be a boy rather than a girl, a new survey finds. The Gallup polling agency told us in the survey, forty percent said they would pick a boy, 28 percent said they would want a girl, and the rest didn't care the baby’s gender or they were not sure.
There’s no way to know how many sex-selective abortion are there in the world every year. All we know is that we are losing the gender balance and some measures should be taken.
