One of the rarest animals in Britain, a black fox, has been spotted for the second time - but was too fast to be caught on camera. First time around, one of the elusive animals was seen in Coventry by Sandra Watts.

Sandra Watts, who lives in the area, said: “We’ve had one around here for the last two years to my knowledge. I’ve seen it myself on quite a few occasions. One time I was out at about 7.30pm in the fields opposite Pandora Road and I must have been watching it for about five minutes as it was snapping at moths. It eventually realized I was there and my dog was moving around as well, and it took off. And it wasn’t until then that I noticed it had the white tail and wasn’t all black.”

“It is a strange looking fox and people thought I was mad when I was first talking about. But one of my friends has seen it as well.” The black fox is so rare in the UK that wildlife experts believe there are only a handful left in the country.

According to legend, black foxes bring bad luck. In medieval times, rural communities used to tell of a fox as ‘black as night, so that it could live in a man's shadow and never be seen.’
