A 12-day-old baby boy in India has died after being snatched and bitten by a monkey.
The accident happened as the boy was drinking his milk in the city of Agra, northern India. The monkey entered the family’s home and grabbed the baby. After taking the baby and biting him, the monkey then dropped the baby on a neighbor’s roof after locals ran after him and threw stones at him.
The baby’s uncle, Dhirendra Kumar, said that the family was heartbroken. “There are too many monkeys in the area,” he said. “We live in fear. We have told the government so many times to help us but they haven’t done anything. The mother of the baby is too distraught to even speak,” The child’s grandmother Pushpa Devi said the family would “never recover” from the loss. “I have lost my grandson. Just a few hours before the monkey attacked our baby, I had him in my arms. Our baby didn’t have to die,” she said.
The baby later died of his injuries in hospital. Locals say monkey attacks in the area are growing more frequently. Locals say the number of monkey attacks in Agra, most famous for being the town where the Taj Mahal is located, is increasing. Another baby is now in hospital after being attacked by monkeys. Some people claim the animals are out of control. “Monkeys are everywhere in Agra,” Shravan Kumar Singh, a local environmental activist said. Locals say monkeys can be seen on almost every street in Agra.
