Tom gets a part-time job delivering newspapers. He always delivers newspapers on Saturdays.
Old Mr. Jerry is one of the customers. Tom always takes the newspaper to old Mr. Jerry’s home by bike. Mr. Jerry is at the end of the road. Tom likes to go there. Mr. Jerry is often waiting for Tom near the front gate with cookies or a nice cupcake. Besides, Mr. Jerry often asks Tom what he is doing, what he is going to do for the summer and what he likes to do.
The thing that Tom didn’t like about Mr. Jerry is his never-ending stories about his boyhood in Chicago. Tom is never asked to hear about Mr. Jerry’s boyhood, but he couldn’t get away.
After Mr. Jerry’s wife died in May, Tom can see that Mr. Jerry is lonelier than ever. He would often go along with Tom as Tom gave out the newspapers. Mr. Jerry seems to have all day, and Tom is often late giving newspapers to his other customers. Tom doesn’t complain(抱怨), but the customers are unhappy.
