IF Tina Smith hadn’t stayed in bed a little longer than usual this morning to escape SA’s foul weather, she’d probably be dead.

Wild weather cut power to thousands of properties and brought down several trees that damaged homes overnight.

A branch from a large gum tree crashed through a covered pergola area at the back of Ms Smith’s Redwood Park home — just where she would normally be enjoying her morning cup of coffee at the time. “I woke up about 7.30 am and I thought about getting up but I heard the wind and the rain and decided to stay in bed a bit longer,” Ms Smith, 53, said.“About 10 minutes later, I heard the noise, where I normally sit in the morning, was the biggest branch.

“If I had have been sitting there it could have killed me. I’m just shaking, I could not believe how close it was. I was very, very lucky.“Someone was looking out for me. I think I’m going to buy a X Lotto ticket.”

Falling trees also caused damage to homes at Banksia Park and Modbury North, and have damaged cars at Pooraka and Mile End.

A man driving at Yankalilla early this morning was fortunate to avoid serious injury when a tree fell on his car on Main St.

A man driving the car was able to get out and was taken to Flinders Medical Centre with suspected spinal injuries. He is in a stable condition.
