Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional Chinese festival with a long history of more than 2,000 years. It falls on a different day each year. This year, it falls on Friday, June 3. China will have a public holiday from Friday (June 3) to Sunday (June 5).
There are many stories about the start of this festival. Among them, the most famous one is about Qu Yuan. Qu Yuan was a poet during the Warring States period(战国时期) of ancient China. He drowned himself in the Miluo River on the 5th day of the 5th Chinese lunar(农历的) month, because his beloved Chu State fell to the State of Qin. Local people tried to save him or find his body, but they didn’t succeed. So in order to remember Qu Yuan, every fifth day of the fifth lunar month people beat drums and go boating on the river as they once did to keep fish and evil spirits(恶魔) away from his body.
Now Chinese people practice many traditions to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival. Dragon boat racing is one of the most important ones. The activity is widely held in China’s southern and southeastern areas. Eating zongzi also plays an important part in the Dragon Boat Festival celebration. In China, almost every family will eat zongzi when the festival comes. Depending on the location of China, the taste of zongzi is different. That’s because the eating habits are different. Usually, people in southern China like the salty one while those in northern China like the sweet one.
