On April 10, 1912, the Titanic began its first trip. Many passengers were on the cruise ship. It was expected to cross the Atlantic Ocean. It left from England to New York.
Four days later, the Titanic hit an iceberg. The ship became filled with water. It sank (沉没) to the bottom of the sea the next day. Some people got into lifeboats. But there were not enough lifeboats for everyone. Many people died.

First-class passengers had fancy meals. The Titanic was also one of the first ships with electric (电的) lights in all of its rooms. The Titanic sank more than 100 years ago. But scientists and historians still study the ship. They dive (潜水) underwater and look at the destroyed ship.
There are rules today that passenger ships must follow on long trips between countries. They must carry enough lifeboats for all passengers.
