According to Gizmodo.com, the CDC has announced that it is looking into a salmonella outbreak that could possibly be tied to contact with hedgehogs. The CDC is advising against hugging or kissing hedgehogs, even if you own one as a pet.
Eleven people across eight states have all fallen ill after coming into contact with a pet hedgehog. One such individual has reportedly been in hospital. Although no deaths have been reported due to this outbreak, people with weak immune systems should be cautious as they can be particularly easy to be infected with salmonella.
So far, incidents of this strain due to contact with hedgehogs have been reported in Colorado, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Texas, and Wyoming.
