To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Big Mac, McDonald's is distributing a five-piece set of commemorative coins in the world, a birthday gift to fans of the fast food sandwich. "Since it was introduced at a family-owned McDonald's restaurant 50 years ago, the Big Mac is popular in the globe and is enjoyed in cities from Shanghai to Chicago because it provides delicious taste and good moments to people all over the world," said McDonald's President and CEO Steve Easterbrook. "So we wanted a global celebration as unique as the burger itself."
McDonald's China started distributing the MacCoins in 2,500 shops across the country on August 6th. Customers can receive a MacCoin with the purchase of a Big Mac. Media reported that people queued(排队) up at McDonald's stores for the coins, and some even fainted(晕倒) due to long waits. On Xianyu (Idle Fish), the used-goods mobile app of e-commerce giant Alibaba, a MacCoin is now priced 80 yuan and a set of five MacCoins is 800 yuan. Yue Shenshan, a lawyer with Yuecheng Law Firm in Beijing, said the McDonald's anniversary coins were a souvenir, and could not be regarded as legal coins.
