Peking University President Lin Jianhua apologized after his mispronunciation of a word at its 120th anniversary celebration. The word should read "honghu". That means birds can fly high. The president read it as "honghao". It has no meaning. It has a heated debate online. Most people said it is a big mistake for Lin Jianhua. They thought he was not qualified to be head of one of China's best universities.
Lin wrote a letter of apology on Weiming BBS, the university's online board. He said, "I didn’t know the pronunciation and learned it this time." Some people respect Lin's honesty and bravery because he can face his shortcoming. But others did not accept his apology and said Lin should have been "prepared before reading the speech". Lin is a chemist and he said in the letter. Although I’m a university president, I’m not good at literature and may make students and friends disappointed. He said he received a poor education in primary and middle school because of the Great Cultural Revolution and spent his childhood and youth in a small farm. He understood the difference between the subject and verb in a sentence before taking the college entrance exam. "I am not writing this letter to defend my ignorance and mistake, but I want you to know my real life," he wrote. "Your president is not a perfect man. I have shortcomings, and I make mistakes."
