Chinese experts claimed that smog(雾霾) can delay global warming because the particles floating in the air help oceans absorb CO2.
The smog was believed to do nothing aside from(除……之外) damaging people’s health and the ecosystem on the Earth, but this can be changed, Li Weijun, a professor at Shandong University, and Shi Zongbo, a researcher at the University of Birmingham, told the Science and Technology Daily on Monday.
Li said that scientists have believed for a long time that the acid(酸) produced by human activity and emissions can allow the iron oxide(氧化铁) which cannot get solved in the water to change into iron which can get solved in the water. If the particle settles on the surface of the ocean, it can allow the living things on the surface of the ocean to effectively use iron and encourage the growth of sea microorganism(微生物).
The process can store more CO2 in the ocean and delay the global warming process, said Li, adding that previously there was no evidence to prove that the acid substance helps iron oxide change into iron. However, scientists found products produced by steel factories and coal factories in the Yellow Sea region contain iron substances and are surrounded by sulfate(硫酸盐). The sulfate surface contains iron, which provides "solid evidence" for the theory.
